Basic Drone Electronics (DIY)

Instructor: DroneXP

Created: 10 Oct, 2025

Courses Descriptions

A basic drone electronics list includes all essential components required for flight and control. The main electronics for a typical quadcopter or hobby drone are:

Key Drone Electronic Components

  • Flight Controller: The central "brain" of the drone that processes inputs, stabilizes flight, and manages sensors

  • Motors: Usually brushless DC motors, one per propeller, for lift and maneuvering.

  • Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC): Control the speed of each motor based on flight controller signals.

  • Battery: Typically a LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery provides power for all electronics.

  • Power Distribution Board (PDB): Ensures the battery’s power is distributed to all motors, ESCs, and the flight controller.

  • Transmitter and Receiver: Radio link for control signals between the remote controller and the drone.

  • Propellers: Physically attached to motors for creating lift and movement.

  • GPS Module (on advanced drones): Enables autonomous navigation and features like "return to home".

Other Important Electronic Parts

  • Camera and Gimbal (optional/additional): Used for aerial photography and stabilized footage.

  • Sensors: IMU (inertial measurement units), barometer, magnetometer, and sometimes ultrasonic/infrared for obstacle detection.

  • FPV (First Person View) Video Transmitter and Antenna (for FPV drones).

  • Voltage/Current Sensor: Monitors battery usage and flight time.

  • Crystal Oscillator and Clock Circuits: For precise timing and communications.

  • Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs): Underlie all electronic assemblies.
